Re: New Grips

Remember a post about a month ago, entitled 'inspiration'? Well, I decided to make myself a set of stag 1911 grips.

My father let me borrow a bench grinder, which I used to do most of the shaping work, after roughing the slabs out with a hacksaw and a bandsaw.

I next used sandpaper to smooth them out, and drilled the screw holes with a black and decker.

I then went to an emery board and finished the smoothing.

Finally, I coated them with bee-grease (a mixture of beeswax and lard) and heated them, to seal them and give them a nice sheen. Some light hand buffing, and they're all done.

I like the way they turned out. One day soon I'm going to have to make a nice OWB holster for the Springfield.

Nissan Versa

Went from a 2000 Honda Accord with 198000 miles to a 2008 Nissan Versa with 44000 miles for $8k.

My wife is happy with her new car.

Funerals

We buried my grandmother this weekend. It was not unexpected. She had been on hospice for a while. She was a great woman, and will be missed.

At the wake, I got to reconnect with cousins, and see family I haven't seen in a long while. I imagine that if grandma Rita knew that her death was a catalyst for visiting family and relatives not seen in a long time, it would make her happy.

She was always a firm believer in family.

In other news, bluesun at deadmandance (link over in my sidebar) lost his grandfather recently. Please, if you say a prayer for my grandmother's loss, toss in a prayer for his grandfather, too.

Reloading

My dad was able to find a good deal on an RCBS reloading press and some dies. With that I already have, all I lack now is a priming tool, a powder measure, a scale, powder, and primers. By this summer, I should be cranking out .38 special, .357, and 9mm!

This is gonna be awesome!

Dinner

Sage rubbed chicken topped with honey, spicy mustard, bacon, and cheddar.

Rough mashed potatoes with savory, garlic, and a coronary-inducing amount of butter.

And, I ate it all before snapping the pic, but fresh, pan-seared asparagus, seared with just a touch of the bacon grease...

Yummy!

(Possible) New Gun

I was speaking with my brother today, and we started talking guns. He and his bride went to the range yesterday, and they rented a sub-compact Glock and a sub-compact Springfield XD. His bride loved the XD, and is considering getting one. I asked what she was planning on doing with her Diamondback DB9, and she said she was going to sell it. Partly, she wants to finance the XD, and partly, she wants to get rid of it because she doesn't have the wrist strength for it. My brother says if he feeds it good ammo, he has no problems with it, but his bride's upper body strength isn't such that she can shoot it consistently without the occasional jam. I asked what they wanted for it, and decided that at the brother discount being offered, I'd be dumb to pass it up. They've shot possibly 150 rounds through it, so it's in great shape. They told me to take it home, run a few boxes through it, and either clean it good and return it, or bring them a check. If I can get a few boxes through it with no jams, I'll be keeping it.
I like it. So much, in fact, that I mad a holster for it about 2 hours ago.
I hope it's a shooter, because I really don't wanna give it back!
