Leather

I posted a few weeks back about a possible new gun, a Diamondback 9mm. Well, I ended up not buying it, because I couldn't get reliable feeding from it. I made a pocket holster for it, which I sent back to my brother with the gun. I figured that when he found a buyer for it, a holster might help sweeten the deal.

I also made a belt mounted, left hand concealment holster for it, but I put the stitching just a bit too close, so it was too tight, and drawing it was more of a vicious, belt-misaligning jerking motion than a smooth tug. I threw it in my holster box and forgot about it.

My wife's parents are up from Florida this week to celebrate the Boy-o's birthday, and when Father-In-Law asked where he could store his gun, I remembered that he carried a mousegun and dug around in my holster box. Fits like it was made for his gun.

Happy accident.

Birthday Fun!

The Boy-o made his 5th trip around the sun today. He woke to presents from his Florida grandparents, and a new bicycle from me and his mom. We are on the road now to a science museum for children.

He's having a blast today.

Contrast

So different. One has a hammer, one doesn't. One is single action. One is double action. One is a single stack .45acp, one is a double stack 9mm. One is polymer, one is steel

I could go on. These are separated by... what? 70 years of technology? They are both pinnacles of a design theory that suggests form follows function. Both are beautiful, largely due to their simplicity and ruggedness. Both have staying power. They are arguably the 2 most ubiquitous semi-auto handguns on the planet. Both can be disassembled and reassembled with minimal training and few tools.

The Internet has flamewars over which is the better handgun, but for as different as they are... they sure have a hell of a lot in common.

I feel equally comfortable with either at my side.

Re: New Grips

Remember a post about a month ago, entitled 'inspiration'? Well, I decided to make myself a set of stag 1911 grips.
My father let me borrow a bench grinder, which I used to do most of the shaping work, after roughing the slabs out with a hacksaw and a bandsaw.
I next used sandpaper to smooth them out, and drilled the screw holes with a black and decker.
I then went to an emery board and finished the smoothing.
Finally, I coated them with bee-grease (a mixture of beeswax and lard) and heated them, to seal them and give them a nice sheen. Some light hand buffing, and they're all done.
I like the way they turned out. One day soon I'm going to have to make a nice OWB holster for the Springfield.

Funerals

We buried my grandmother this weekend. It was not unexpected. She had been on hospice for a while. She was a great woman, and will be missed.

At the wake, I got to reconnect with cousins, and see family I haven't seen in a long while. I imagine that if grandma Rita knew that her death was a catalyst for visiting family and relatives not seen in a long time, it would make her happy.

She was always a firm believer in family.

In other news, bluesun at deadmandance (link over in my sidebar) lost his grandfather recently. Please, if you say a prayer for my grandmother's loss, toss in a prayer for his grandfather, too.

Reloading

My dad was able to find a good deal on an RCBS reloading press and some dies. With that I already have, all I lack now is a priming tool, a powder measure, a scale, powder, and primers. By this summer, I should be cranking out .38 special, .357, and 9mm!

This is gonna be awesome!
